Set in an idyllic location just 5 miles from the heart of historic Newmarket is Gazeley Stud. Originally built in the 1890’s to house the infamous Lillie Langtry’s band of broodmares, the farm was part of the much larger Dalham Estate. Lilly’s famous 1900 Ascot Gold Cup winner, Merman, was the first foal born on the site. He later went on to win the Ceasarawitch before returning to the farm to stand at stud.

After Lilly Langtry moved to America, Gazeley Stud was sold and became a stallion base. The 1928 Guineas winner and Derby second Flamingo was one of the studs earliest successful stallions, producing 1939 Gold cup winner Flyon and Flamenco who won the St James Palace stakes – both were also reared at the stud. Since the 1970’s stallions that have stood at Gazeley include Hotfoot, Tyrnavos and Sizzling Melody.

By the turn of the new millennium the stud had begun to fall into a state of disrepair, being purchased by its present occupants in the Summer of 2008 with a vision of restoring the stud back to its former glory and once again reinstating ‘Gazeley Stud’ as one of Newmarket’s finest nurseries for racehorses of the future.
